August
Math: We will be starting off with Module 1-2 (place value, review basic multiplication facts, standard addition algorithm with regrouping). Students will receive lessons and hands on activities in class and will receive follow up math homework each night. A quick review of the lesson will be on each worksheet in case you need to lend a hand to your child. Please also encourage your child to do the starred IXL lessons at home and iReady!
Social Studies/Science: We will be learning about the Hawaiian islands and the ahupua`a. We will learning about Earth processes like earthquakes, erosion and weathering.
Health: Students will be focusing on character education, Second Step, and learning to work together. All fourth grade teachers have been emphasizing team work and cooperation in the first semester and we would like to reintroduce and reinforce these traits. This year, Lunalilo adopted a new program called Second Step. This teaches students whole child skills and is reinforced daily on campus. Please also make sure to do the Home Links with your child each week.
ELA: Vocabulary and spelling are also used throughout the week, look for words to study in your child's planner. Students also have been learning to cite evidence in a text by highlighting. We also continue to use Scholastic News as part of reading informative text, citing evidence, and reading comprehension. This year, our school will be implementing WIN (What I Need) time to assist students with specific ELA skills at their level of understanding. WIN will be dedicated, uninterrupted time to work with both myself and on independent assignments 3x a week for 45 minutes.
